Benefits of Regular Exercise

Life is complicated.
Life is busy.

I know. Sometimes getting off work and just sitting on the couch with a plateful of easy from-the-box foods and a glass of wine is like a gift from heaven. I've been there and sometimes I still do this. There are days when just making macaroni-and-cheese and adding some canned peas and tuna to it is all I can manage to do. And that's okay!!!

Once in a while.

However, what our bodies need is activity and healthy fresh foods to function efficiently. Without these things, we begin to suffer from various ailments such as illness (with emphasis on sinus infections), depression, aches and pains, etc. When we begin to suffer from these, the idea of exercise seems even more daunting and makes us even more likely to want to come home and sit on the couch and zone out in front of the television rather than taking a walk or popping in a workout DVD.

Have you ever noticed that more people get sick in the winter? Ever wonder why? The most likely reason is that we shut ourselves away from the fresh air, but another is that many people stop being active in the winter. Most people hole up and restart their workout regiment in spring, anxious to get ready for "bikini season." It's such a vicious cycle that can be easily ended and keep you feeling great all year long.

There are so many benefits to exercising regularly and you don't have to put in 2 hours, or even an hour a day to get these benefits! If you have 10-30 minutes, you will begin to see a difference in how you feel.

BENEFITS OF REGULAR EXERCISE

1. One benefit that I think it most important is that exercise is a stress reliever. Stress causes so many terrible ailments from depression to illnesses and anxiety. It also ages you and brings you down in general. If left unchecked, it is believed that it can lead to stomach ulcers.

***Excellent, low-impact workouts to help relieve stress: piyo, yoga, pilates, tai chi or tai cheng

2. Another benefit is increased strength and flexibility. Having increased strength and flexibility leads to fewer aches and pains and decreases your chance of injuring yourself while carrying laundry, lifting your toddler, running to get your dog who decided to try to dart into traffic (wait, those are my reasons).

***Great workouts to help increase strength and flexibility: weight training, Les Mills Pump, yoga, pilates, power walking, general calisthetics, slim in 6

3. Exercise boosts mood and you libido! Who doesn't want either of those! Check out this article from WebMD for information about depression and exercise. Any type of exercise is good for this.

4. Exercise wards off illness and other ailments. It's been proven to increase good cholesterol, while lowering triglycerides! It keeps your heart healthy and helps decrease your chance of type 2 diabetes.

5. Exercise can help you manage your weight. Everyone needs to think about this one. In a society where obesity is as common as 1 in 4 people, it's a problem that affects everyone. I'm sure you know someone you love very much who is either overweight or obese. I can name more than 5 people. All of them have some sort of illness or ailment that is associated with their weight. Even those who are of a normal weight need to utilize exercise to maintain their weight and for the benefits I've already listed.

***If you are overweight or obese yourself, you would benefit from taking daily walks. Beyond that, talk to your doctor before beginning any form of exercise. Another tip I have is to try Shakeology. It's is  clinically proven to lower blood pressure and bad cholesterol without making any other lifestyle changes. All you have to do is drink a yummy shake once a day.

when it comes down to it, it's not about a certain size or a certain number on a scale. It's about a feeling. How do you feel about yourself right now? If you feel amazing, keep up what you're doing! Go you!!!

If you feel sluggish, please contact me for a FREE Eat Clean group I'm starting in January.
