Mother Nature has perfected the birth process and when left alone, more times than not, a woman will give birth naturally, with LESS pain than an induced labor, and with a much easier recovery period.
PERIOD.
I am amazed and appalled with how women are:
1. being brainwashed to believe they cannot have a natural birth
2. rushed/forced to deliver a baby within 24 hours in a hospital setting
3. told to avoid various drugs, chemicals throughout pregnancy, but then given potentially lethal cocktails to induce labor
4. treated like machines during labor, birth, and recovery
I have always had a problem with birth in a hospital setting. Even as a 19 year old pregnant woman, I thought it was ridiculous to have a baby in a hospital. I have always thought a hospital should be there for the sick, and emergencies. The things they were created to deal with.
Hospitals are vital. Doctors and their expertise are vital.
That said, I don't think a woman should immediately consult a doctor when pregnant. I think she should consult a midwife and have an obstetrician on stand-by for emergencies that may (though unlikely) arise. I'm not undermining the importance of obstetricians, rather I am emphasizing their importance during relevant times.
I wish the pharmaceutical companies would take a step (or a few!) back and I wish women were routinely encouraged to trust their bodies, rather than fear them. I wish insurance companies would back the F up and allow good midwives and doctors to do what is best for moms and babies.
Unfortunately, babies are big business and there is too much money to be made at their expense.
It makes me incredibly sad. I hope I can help moms and babies have a safer, happier and healthier birth experiences by avoiding needless (and senseless) interventions, and by helping moms discover their inner strength and beauty.
That's all I want to do.
