Vegan Mom Kills Baby

I recently read about a mother in France who was charged with killing her infant because the infant was nutrient deficient "due to a vegan diet." The baby contracted bronchitis and the parents tried to use natural home remedies to cure the baby, but the baby died.

ARTICLE

This terribly tragic story angers me for a number of reasons.

1. That a vegan diet was considered the cause, when it was parent neglect that caused the baby's death.

2. That the parents did not seek medical treatment for their baby...ok, I'm all for natural remedies, when the person using them is INFORMED and knows what they are doing and when enough is enough. That said, there IS a time and place for professional medical treatment and unfortunately for all involved here - it was too late.

3. Their older daughter is now living in the care of the government, because both of her parents are in jail.

I get really pissed when I see people seeking home remedies online, in forums and on Facebook. They treat them as ignorantly (in my opinion) as the people who are antibiotic happy. They do not educate themselves and simply go by someone else's opinion and experience.

Like I said, I'm ALL FOR natural remedies. I've used them on my own children. HOWEVER...one cannot blindly (and STUPIDLY) assume that if something is natural, it is harmless. This is simply not true and anyone giving children natural ingredients and assuming this is an idiot who may or may not need to be raising their child. Sorry, my opinion. No, I'm not sorry. It's true.

Foxglove is one of my most favorite flowers. It contains Digitalis, which was used in the first heart medications. It is also used to treat inflammation and other ailments (LINK). If the baby wasn't asleep, I'd get my Herbalism book, but the link will suffice for this. Does this mean every Tom, Dick, or Jane should start pulling up their Foxgloves or steeping their leaves in tea? Hell-to-the-no! It angers me that some parents would be quick to do this very thing.

In my opinion, this type of asinine thinking is exactly why Baby Tylenol is off the shelves. Even the makers of Tylenol know many parents are idiots who should not be raising children because they will give their kids anything.

As far as the part about the vegan diet being to blame, this is utter bullshit! Unless this mother was uninformed with her own vegan diet and thus did not consume the proper foods to ensure an adequate diet for her and her baby (which she apparently was) then a vegan diet is perfectly healthy for a breastfeeding mother.

I want to add that I do not believe that the parents meant to harm their baby. I think they meant to do what was right. It is so incredibly sad to me. I cannot imagine what the parents are going through. To lose both of their children. And the older child....to lose the whole family.

So incredibly sad.
