Why this is not discussed more, I don't understand. I'd never heard of it until Kat's well check yesterday.
Apparently a baby girl's vagina and her entire labia minora can fuse together due to a drop in estrogen, (ie. mother's estrogen leaving baby).
Her pediatrician didn't seem worried at all. He said to put Vaseline on it and it should open. If not, he will prescribe an estrogen ointment. I am trying not to worry. She is able to urinate (despite the fact that I do not see an opening at all, as her labia minora appears to be completely closed) and has shown no signs whatsoever of any issue or discomfort.
Some little girls have this until puberty, when natural hormone production opens it up.
Below is an article:
I thought the basic cleaning with a more hands-off approach was best, but I think more care is needed.
I'm going to make a point to be sure she is completely dry, then let her air dry for a while. At home, I'll let her go without her PUL covers to be sure she has air circulation down there.
I've already switched her to fragrance free, all-natural baby wash, rather than the J&J crap.
I hope this helps, but more importantly, I hope she never develops a UTI from it.
